--- title: San Francisco 2016 author: Kevin Nobel --- # San Francisco 2016 Back in 2016 I made my first trip to the United States and visited San Francisco. ## Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge On the San Francisco side of the bridge there is a bus stop next to the [Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center](https://www.goldengatebridgestore.org/). In and around the welcome center you can find various objects and signs with information about the bridge. Of course you can also get a beautiful view of the bridge from here. ![View of the Golden Gate Bridge from the "Post Card Viewpoint".](img/golden-gate-south.jpeg) I started my hike across the Golden Gate at the welcome center. I noticed that the path was very crowded until you reach the first pilar of the bridge. Somewhere in the middle a giant container ship sailed under the bridge. ![Bird's-eye view of the Oakland Express entering the San Francisco Bay.](img/oakland-express.jpeg) When you reach the other side, you will be greeted by the Lime Point Light . ![The Lime Point Lighthouse.](img/lime-point.jpeg) When you get off the bridge at the other side there is a rest area for highway traffic. The rest area offers a view point of the bridge. ![View of the Golden Gate Bridge from the rest area.](img/rest-area.jpeg) If take tha path under the highway you can access Battery Spencer from which you get probably the best view of the bridge and also the Pacific ocean. ![View of the Golden Gate Bridge from Battery Spencer.](img/battery-spencer-bridge.jpeg) ![View of the Pacific Ocean from Battery Spencer.](img/battery-spencer-pacific.jpeg) From Battery Spencer I walked under the bridge on Conzelman Road and Moore Road to Fort Baker. From which I walked to the Sausalito ferry terminal to cach my ferry back to San Francisco. ![View of the bridge from Moore Road.](img/moore.jpeg) ![One of many beautiful Victorian houses in Sausalito.](img/home.jpeg) ## Cable Car Museum The [Cable Car Museum](http://www.cablecarmuseum.org/) is a free museum which houses the engines that pull the cables under the streets on which the cable cars grip. Several cable cars are on display inside the building as well. ![Engines in the Cable Car Power House.](img/cable-car-power-house.jpeg) ![Detail of plaque on one of the engines.](img/cable-car-engine-detail.jpeg) The engines are not not aligned with the streets so large sheaves are used to route the cables. ![Sheaves in the Cable Car Power House.](img/cable-car-sheaves.jpeg) ## Miscellaneous pictures ![The Hobart Building.](img/hobart-building.jpeg) ![Entrance of the Administration Building at Alcatraz.](img/administration-building.jpeg) ![View from Alcatraz.](img/alcatraz-view.jpeg) ![Car parked on a slope.](img/sloped-parking.jpeg)
